Children's Book Author Steven Layne Visits East Elementary

Steven Layne answers questions from the students during his visit.

On February 9, 2011, students at East Elementary School had the privilege of hearing award-winning children’s book author Steven Layne read from his books and talk about being a writer. He told the students that every one of them was also an author. “Some people believe that you are an author if you have a book published … or your books are for sale in a bookstore… but an author is someone who writes, and all the students at East Elementary write, so you are all authors.” Younger students especially enjoyed his reading of Love the Baby, and the older students can’t wait to get their hands on The Other Side of Paradise so they can find out how the story ends after hearing Layne read an excerpt.

When he is not visiting schools or speaking at reading conferences, Layne is a Professor of Literacy Education at Judson University, near Chicago. He has authored a professional book, Igniting a Passion for Reading. At the end of the day, Layne presented an informative in-service for the school staff on that topic and his presentation was filled with great ideas. Staff members from Walter Bickett Elementary also attended the workshop.
