Turner and VonEgidy are State Wrestling Champions!

Pictured are Alex Turner and Parker VonEgidy with their State wrestling championship medals.

Alex Turner and Parker VonEgidy are state wrestling champs after winning their weight class in Greensboro on February 25-26. Turner won the 135 lb. weight class by beating an undefeated wrestler from Trinity High School in the finals by a score of 5-1. Likewise, VonEgidy won the 152 lb. weight class by defeating a wrestler from Louisburg by a score of 3-2. The accomplishment of state champion has not been achieved since 1993 at Piedmont High School. Other strong finishes at the state wrestling tournament included Stephen Ivey (3rd Place), Kyle Eiss (4th Place), and Dylan Nelson (5th Place). Overall, the Piedmont wrestling team finished in 3rd place in the state tournament, only ½ point behind the second place team. Congratulations Alex and Parker on your state championships and congratulations to the entire Piedmont wrestling team on an unbelievable season!

Alex returned to the 135 lb. weight class, the same weight class that he wrestled last year. This forced him to monitor his weight carefully throughout the season, something that can be a major challenge to wrestlers. Turner worked hard throughout the season to earn the accomplishment of state champion. Alex only lost three matches all year, two of these at a prestigious tournament over the holiday break. Alex was the Conference and Regional champion at 135 lbs. this year.  During his state championship run, Alex defeated the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th place finishers in his weight class. When asked for his reflections on the state championship and his wrestling career at Piedmont, Alex stated, “Honestly, I would have to say that all of the sacrifices I have made and hard work that I have put into this sport have all been worth it!” As  a senior with a 4.55 GPA , Alex will leave Piedmont with 128 career wins and plans to walk on for the NC State wrestling team in the fall, where he will be enrolled majoring in engineering.
Sophomore Parker VonEgidy finished 6th in the state last year as a freshmen. Parker has been determined ever since he left the podium last year to finish as a state champion this year.  â€œThey all said I was supposed to win a state championship last year, but I knew that I couldn’t let that get to my head and I still had to go out and work hard and not expect it to be given to me. “ In keeping with this determination, VonEgidy has attended numerous national and out-of-state tournaments in the off season. Parker finished 61-1 this year, claiming the conference and regional championships. Parker defeated every placer in his weight class during his state championship title run leaving no doubt that he was the best wrestler at his weight class in Division 2AA. Parker will look to repeat as state champion next year and receiving All-American honors is now his goal as he will participate in the Sophomore Nationals at Virginia Beach at the end of March.
