Teacher saves choking student

Daniel Ocampo talks about how it feels being saved by his teacher.

Tom Stewart, a BHESA fourth grade teacher, saved one of his student's life last week. Mr. Stewart's class was at lunch in the school cafeteria when the incident happened.

One of Mr. Stewart's students came over to him and said that a classmate was having a problem. Mr. Stewart quickly assessed the situation and determined that the student, Daniel Ocampo, was choking.

Mr. Stewart began the Heimlich maneuver on Daniel and after about thirty seconds, a piece of corn dog was dislodged from Daniel's throat.

Mr. Stewart was trained in the Heimlich maneuver in October, but certainly didn't expect to test his knowledge on one of his own students.

Mr. Stewart and Daniel were interviewed by WBTV in Charlotte and were featured as a "Good News" segment on Thursday evening, March 10, during the six o'clock broadcast.
