FHHS hosts first annual Health Fair

On March 3, Forest Hills High School was proud to host the first annual Health Fair presented by the Queens University ABSN Nursing Students. This fair was sponsored by the School Nurses of Union County, who have been providing clinical sites for the Queens University ABSN Nursing Students.

The Fair focused on topics which many teens may have to deal with on a daily basis. Information booths were set up in the school gym, and the students were called by grade and rotated through each site. The topics included: cyber bullying, driving safety (including texting and other distractions), dangers of smoking/chewing tobacco, drug and alcohol addiction/abuse, tattoos and piercings, mental health issues, proper hand-washing, healthy meal selection, anorexia and bulimia, obesity, sun tanning, diabetes, traumatic brain injury, dental health, noise-induced hearing loss, and domestic violence. The Queens School of Nursing faculty members attended the event and were able to give high school students one-on-one advice about pursuing nursing as a career.

The high school students enjoyed the interaction and teaching of the nursing students. FHHS school nurse Tina Medlin was pleased to hear such favorable responses about the fair from faculty and students. Medlin said, “Health education and healthy choices are one important component of school nursing and helping students make healthy choices will positively enhance their academic success. It was great to have the Queens students' booths and handouts as a resource to draw from.”
