First Book-Charlotte celebration
BHESA proudly hosted the third First Book-Charlotte Book Distribution on March 25. First Book-Charlotte is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide books to children who may not have the opportunity to obtain books to read and keep at home.
Brittany Slagle and Erin Felker, teachers at BHESA, secured the grant for our students for this school year. Our students received $17,000 in books for this year. The first distribution for this year was held in December, at which time each student received six books to keep at home.
All students participated in an assembly in the auditorium While students were being seated, a slide show of the First Book Charlotte December distribution was played. Mr. Harvey welcomed everyone, expressing his joy & gratitude to First Book-Charlotte for their generosity. Special thanks were expressed to Ms. Slagle & Mrs. Felker, for writing the grant as well as for planning & coordinating the day’s events. Colleen Ludington, co-founder of First Book-Charlotte, spoke to students via Skype. Dr. Davis, superintendent of UCPS spoke to students about how the gift of reading improves quality of life & makes us more productive citizens.
The CATA Glee Club, under the direction of David Mosely, student teacher, performed several songs for our students. The group performed “Tink of Me†(a song from Jamaica) , “Bonse Aba†(a song from Africa), “The Water is Wideâ€, and “Every Time I Feel the Spiritâ€. Following these songs, the Glee Club further engaged students by moving into the audience where they taught students how to sing “Tink of Meâ€.
The final portion of the assembly delighted students as they watched faculty and staff reading Click, Clack, Moo.
In classrooms, students opened the “gift†of six books and enthusiastically worked on several hands-on activities which correlated with the books they received. Activities ranged from making dream catchers, “vehicles†of transportation using graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, & frosting, headbands with various cut-out animals on them, and paper airplanes.
Many thanks to our special guests, Dr. Davis, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Tom Bulla, Director of Elementary Education, Jane McNeely-Sowell, Director of Federal Programs, and Dr. Denise Patterson, Assistant Superintendent for Auxiliary Services. We appreciate them taking time out of their busy schedules to attend today’s special celebration. Special thanks go to CATA Chorus and Student Council, students from Hickory Grove Christian School, and students from Youth With a Mission (YWAM) for volunteering their time and talents performing and helping students with activities in the classroom.
