HOSA Students Excel at State Competition

Ms. Jennifer Owen with her Biotech students who were all top 10 finalists.

Twenty-eight of Central Academy’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) members traveled with Ms. Elaine Holeman and Ms. Jennifer Owen to Greensboro, NC for the North Carolina HOSA State Conference on March 24th – 26th to compete against thousands of North Carolina HOSA members from across the state.

HOSA members compete in a wide variety of events which test their knowledge, public speaking skills, artistic abilities, hands-on medical skills, and ability to work as a team. Students compete in a first round on Thursday and the top 20 in each event continue on to the final round of competitions on Friday.

The top 10 in each event are called to the stage Friday night to receive finalist pins, and the top 3 in each event receive medals and an invitation to compete at the HOSA National Conference

Since 2006, CATA has only had 2 students qualify for the National conference. In 2009, Hillary Williams made CATA history by becoming the first CATA student ever to qualify for Nationals when she received a 3rd place medal in Biotechnology as a sophomore. Hillary was unfortunately unable to attend the National Conference that year due to a conflict with the Union County Travel Club trip to Europe.

Last year, Victoria Morrone made CATA history by becoming the 1st CATA student to compete at the National level after winning a 2nd place medal in Concepts of Health Care as a junior. She represented CATA last June at the HOSA National Conference in Orlando, Florida.

This year, the students had a weekend full of fun with the following amazing results:

  • 26 of the 28 students made it to the final rounds of competition!
  • 19 were Top 10 Finalists in the State and were awarded finalist pins on stage!
  • And this year, CATA students greatly raised the bar by having SEVEN NATIONAL FINALISTS!!!!!!!!
