Cavs Host Wake Up to Ag Day
Wake Up to Agriculture Day is an annual UCPS tradition that raises awareness of the agricultural heritage of Union County and North Carolina. CHS hosted the event April 7, 2011. Forty Cavaliers, including members of the FFA and students from Mr. Whitlow’s Animal Science and Horticulture classes, helped plan and carry out the event. Over 400 third grade students from Waxhaw Elementary, New Town Elementary, and Kensington Elementary visited and traveled through various stations in small groups.
In the Greenhouse the students made “Bean Buddiesâ€. In this activity, students learned about germination by planting green bean seeds in a ziploc baggie with a wet paper towel. They then made necklaces out of them in order for the seeds to obtain body heat. The combination of those factors would cause the seed to sprout and then could be planted.
The third graders were then invited to visit various animal stations that included a horse, a dog, a hedgehog, a turkey, chickens, and goats. At each station CHS students were on hand to tell the students about the care for each animal and let them pet them. Even McGruff the Crime Dog paid a visit and gave out plenty of hugs to the students. Mr. Whitlow said “We had a lot of fun! I think the kids got to learn a lot and have fun in the process!â€
